Here is another aspect of wisdom – its ability to protect and keep safe those who possess it. How does this work? Wisdom respects and obeys the commandments of God, and his statutes dispense safety to those who follow them. They set boundaries of legitimate behaviour which the wise know it is dangerous to cross. Instead of yielding to curiosity or fleshly desire, they know that God is wiser than them and beyond where he sets the limits, it would be folly to venture. The wisdom of God’s people is largely based on the wisdom of God which they trust as it is revealed to them. This wisdom keeps them from dangers which they are aware of, but it also keeps them from new dangers which they have not seen before, dangers which come to us disguised as benefits. By avoiding sin in every form, we are kept from spiritual enemies who cannot reach us because we have taken refuge in Christ.
