This is also a picture of a benefit that wisdom gives. God gives wisdom to his children, just as he gives instincts to his dumb creatures. If the instincts he puts in creatures that lack reason are so marvellous, how much more marvellous are the gifts that he reserves for man, the highest among what he has made, and the only creature made in the image of God! Wisdom teaches those who have it, but unlike the lower creatures which operate without being aware of their Creator, man receives wisdom and rejoices in it, and consciously and deliberately carries out its inducements. Yes, wisdom brings God’s people together and makes them act as one for the advance of his kingdom. It makes them long for the return of Christ to end this vain world, and, in the meantime, it makes them to pray and to serve him with all their powers. It is like an invisible king that organises them, not physically, but spiritually, giving them a common purpose so that they march in spiritual ranks. How much can be achieved by Christ’s church when it allows God-given wisdom to direct it.
