The emphasis is on the last of these three actions, and since the same verb in Hebrew is used in each case, it should be translated in the same way each time to convey what Solomon wishes to say. The idea is that as the first two pressures or squeezings mechanically bring about a result, so does the last. The same word is used in each case to link the ideas, so that we look for a similarity between what is taking place. Cause and effect: even though milk and the nose are physical objects and anger is an emotion, the result of the third is almost as mechanical and certain as the first two. This thought is linked to the previous verse, and the first word translated ‘Surely’ could be rendered ‘For’, indicating a more obvious connection with what came before. He is still thinking about the evil that has come out of the mouth and the harm that will follow. Clearly there has been something in those words that was bound to stir up strife, and strife will follow. The speaker has used inflammatory words and provoked either the king’s anger or the anger of those in the community, regardless of what may follow. The same recklessness is present in everyone who transgresses God’s law, for who that understood the consequences that will follow would do this? All the more reason for us to examine ourselves and repent of rash words by admitting our fault, and expressing regret, and adopting a conciliatory tone. If those steps are taken sincerely, there may yet be forgiveness and healing, for such words would be a true indication of repentance and that deep humility which is always present in the returning sinner. So, Solomon had chosen his words carefully and spoken of his foolishness as he returned to the Lord.
