The repentant sinner must be wholeheartedly submitted to God and here is a test of submissiveness. Are we ready to accept God exactly as he is and not try to change him in any way? Do we accept his word precisely as he has given it to us and not try to add to it or take away from it? Why would we want to modify it? Well, because we are uncomfortable with it and sense that we are out of step with it, but instead of being willing to change ourselves we want God to change and accommodate himself to us.
As we come to him, we must allow him to examine every thought. We must open our hearts to his scrutiny and be willing to change anything in us that does not conform to his holiness. If we find ourselves holding back on him, then we must pray that we would not be deceived. This mind-set does not become ours gradually, but is created in us from the moment we are born again. Certainly, the battle is not over straight away, in fact it is only just begun, but for the first time we have a new nature and that nature is willing to put sin to death and to cooperate with the Holy Spirit’s work in us. Though the flesh is still in rebellion, our minds are now submitted to God.
