This passage is unique in Scripture, singing the praises of a virtuous wife who is devoted to her husband and her family, and who makes such an enormous contribution to the family unit and indeed to the whole of society, since the family is at the heart of society. This last section of the Book of Proverbs may also be the words of the mother of Lemuel, but the reflective nature of the question at the beginning suggests that it could be Lemuel himself, that is, Solomon, who is speaking.
How does a man know when he has found such a woman, since his ability to read the heart of another is so limited? He starts with prayer to God who reads the heart of each one through and through. He seeks a wife, convinced that God has a specific will for his life, and that he is able to guide his children in this most important of matters in life. The Lord has prepared a wife for the praying husband who not only has the extensive capacities described here, but who is perfectly designed to be the means of his sanctification.
