Proverbs 31:15

Another side of her character is viewed here. She is ready to put herself out for the sake of others, even for those who are her servants. She is not too proud to serve those who serve her, setting them an example for them to follow. She knows that before God, they are all equal and that mistress and servant all have the same Master in heaven, therefore none should take advantage of another. She is hard working even though she is mistress of the whole house, and she thinks carefully of the needs of everyone under her roof. It is a joy to serve in such a household for the atmosphere is not tainted by a haughty spirit or by affected superiority, even though each one remembers the place they have and does not try to usurp that place. She would rather build a regime where each one serves voluntarily and takes their place gladly, even though while on earth roles have to be honoured and preserved. She manages the household and assigns work to each one in a way that all recognise as fair. They therefore do not find it hard to submit to her rule over them, for she does not oppress those under her.
Application
Let us all carry out our roles in this world with the realisation that they are temporary. How can the believing master or mistress treat the believing slave as if they had any intrinsic superiority over them? We are like actors in a play whose status in real life is very different. As we act out this life, we remember that these roles will not be for ever. Even those who are unconverted around us are made in the image of God and we embrace the hope that they too will be added to Christ’s kingdom. When we stand before our true Master in heaven, all earthly distinctions will be gone.
