She acquires all the skills she needs to fulfil her responsibilities. The distaff was a long stick around which the fibres were wound to keep them untangled in preparation for spinning, and the spindle was the device which twisted the fibres to produce the thread or yarn. This was just the beginning of the process and she would go on to design clothing for the family, to keep them warm in winter and present them in a respectable way. There was so much to be done that there was no time to be idle. A wife that was not busy in all these ways would be evident to the community, because her children and her husband would not be well turned out. That would be a matter of shame. So she is using every part of the day to be put to good use.
