Proverbs 31:2

These expressions indicate the care of a mother and her special love for her child. He is her son, different in her eyes from all other sons. For him she would lay down her life and sacrifice it to save him. He is the son of her womb, the one she cared for and nurtured inside her with all the protective instincts of a mother, a life united with her own. At cost to herself she gave birth to him and rejoiced that a man child was brought into the world. How can she regard him as just another human being when God has created such a bond between them? He is the son of her vow, because she has in the deepest recesses of her own heart committed herself to care for him and do all that she can to make his life to flourish. How carefully then has she considered what needs to be said to him, what he needs to be taught! How aware she is of the dangers that will confront him and the relative innocence of the child, and how she longs to give him counsel which will protect him against vicious enemies that come with all the deceit and cunning of the enemy of souls! The unbelieving mother also wishes to give advice for life, but it is limited to the wisdom of this world which sets no higher goal than material prosperity, and happiness in this life which comes to terms with mortality and accepts it as normal. But the godly mother has found the truth for herself and wishes above all to see her child also know the Lord. She has hopes for him which go beyond this world and take hold of God’s eternal promises. May he not therefore stumble and fall to the snares of this life. And the mother of a king who has lived in the court and knows something of the responsibility of rulers, has particular counsel to impart.
