Proverbs 31:27 Commentary and Bible Study

She is like an elder in her own household watching over the conduct of her children and, under her husband, taking responsibility for their training and discipline. She studies the character of each child, knowing that they each have their own individual weaknesses, and require their own particular instruction. She has much authority in the household and her children know they must obey her as well as their father. If there are servants, she manages them also, doing more than just ensure their work is carried out, for she cares for them and aims to help them personally, even though they are not her children. She manages by example as we have seen and by kindness, using discipline only when other gentler methods have failed. She sees life as a time of work and not rest, and so she is always thinking what else she can put her hand to. The idea that her position means that she can just sit back and be waited on; that idea is foreign to her.
