Solomon was also earnestly warned about the indulgence of the flesh; he had failed here too. During the days of his waywardness he had tried every available pleasure that lay within his reach, and he tells us, ‘I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith’ (Ecclesiastes 1:13).
How can those who are called to exercise authority either over earthly nations or over the household of God, give way to a dissolute lifestyle? How can all these things be done if the ruler does not have control over his own conduct? These are heavy responsibilities that requires him to use all the faculties that God has given him. The task they have been given is beyond their natural ability, and therefore they need not only to summon all their powers, but pray to God for help. They cannot afford to undermine any of their capacities in carrying out such a demanding task. Nor can their cry to God for his help be taken seriously if they do not do all in their power to walk uprightly. Intoxication with alcohol or any other sort of overindulgence is completely inconsistent with this.
