Now we are still in the farm illustration, and the point here is this, that the instruction of the father as to how to run the farm or the business may become eclipsed by other things. Let us say that now the father has died, and you are on your own, and here is the exhortation, ‘Let them not depart’, which implies that they cannot be allowed to drift away. Here is my mind, it is stocked with understanding, I know exactly how to run this farm. I know exactly what to do in the right order, and all the techniques, the whole technology, the whole craft, I have got it firmly in my mind, and I know what I am to do to keep the family alive, and to keep everything going. And then other things come along to attract my attention, and I forget. What precisely do you do with this particular herb, or with that particular crop? Well now that the circumstances have changed, and the weather is different. Here is a situation which I have not met before. What shall I do in this new situation? I have forgotten; I have allowed it to go out of my mind, I remember nothing, and I am becoming less effective. That is the picture.

Application

Do you not know that in life there is a tremendous campaign against you to take your attention off divine things? Through this week you will be bombarded with items of interest, with temptations from within your own fallen heart, desires will arise from the devil who tempts you from without, and from this world, which is trying to claim you and steal all your attention to itself. There are constant pressures to eclipse the value you place upon the soul, and upon salvation, and finding the Lord, and pleasing him. Let this teaching not depart from your eyes, slip away; keep it in view. Keep these words in the midst of all your plans and priorities and hopes and interests; never let yourself be stolen away by anything. The gospel is the most important thing. The most important thing is that you hear the gospel, you hear the challenge of the word of God – I need a Saviour, I need forgiveness, I need a new life. Do not let this world sweep that away .
