Comments
‘His own iniquities’ – the man's own iniquities – ‘shall take the wicked himself.’ That man who allowed himself to be seduced, and who betrays his wife will see his family broken up, and his estate sold out to the creditors. What are we going to do about him? asked the society of those days. Well, first and foremost, his own foolishness will be his punishment, says Solomon. But then also he shall be held with the cords of his sin. Oh look at it here, we go off after the world, we suffer the consequences of our action, we will not be happy, we will be brought lower and lower, and we will be bound by our sins, our appetites, and our sins will hold us in their clutches.
Application
This is a fearful state to be in. You know that you are on the road to destruction and that you ought to leave it immediately, but as you examine your own heart, you find you do not have the strength of will to leave it behind. Your love for your sin is too great, and so you are determined to bury whatever concerns you have, whatever sensitivities to sin might trouble you.
