He makes his living by being perverse. He makes his living by dishonesty. This is the idea. He is living by his wits, he does not produce a thing. ‘He deviseth mischief continually.’ He has always got schemes that will work to his advantage, and cause something to fall into his lap. ‘He soweth discord’, which is no doubt a reference to some aspect of his activity. The person who was the dodgy district dealer – very often it paid him to have people against each other, so that he would work his schemes and make his profit. He would serve as a commission agent. He would do anything, and he would invariably do it badly. So you see him here as a crafty, ingratiating, kind of person. And yet he comes to a sticky end.
