And that is Solomon's picture of us, when we are on the run from God, when we are trying to make out in life without the living God. The world tries to represent it exactly the opposite way round. It says that it is religion which is outdated, it is the notion of God which is absurd, it is these things which are preposterous. ‘Do not be shackled by that, be free, indulge yourself, be fulfilled, do what you like.’ But the word of God holds it exactly the other way about. If I am away from God I have a limited cramped life, living with no future, producing nothing of spiritual value. I am completely ignorant of the deep things of life, a trivial person, lying my way through life, with unreality, and falsehood. That is the picture of the one who is away from God. Oh the mercy of God, to gather us in, and to bring us back to him.
