The Lord won't bless with wisdom if there isn't a concern for personal holiness. Modern translations prefer, ‘a proud eye’ to ‘a proud look’, but obviously it is what is done with the eye that is in mind.
God will not bless pride. He will not bless you; he may not even protect you. He may say, in his infinite wisdom, the best thing for this particular child of mine, so heady, so proud, is a big tumble, a big fall, something quite humiliating, exposing him or her to the forces around them, so that they fall to some temptation, bringing them face to face with their weakness, so that I can really restore them. The Baptist Confession says that is the very reason in spite of the doctrine of the perseverance of the saints, why sometimes even Christian people have seasons of backsliding. So that God shall discover unto them their inherent sinfulness and weakness, which in their pride they have lost sight of.
Think of our dear Saviour, the Son of God – ‘This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.’ There was no pride in the Saviour, even though he was God, even though he was perfect and wonderful in every respect, yet he came as the lowly Son of God, ready to be buffeted, ready to be spat upon. His eyes were fixed on others and their good. His heart of concern was filled with the spiritual disaster that surrounded others, and he was a person of infinite sensitivity, and concern, as he went about doing good, and proclaiming the saving gospel.
