This is all about God's standards, God's ways: ‘Bind them continually upon thine heart.’ Hold on to them, value them.
Actually the word of God and Solomon himself goes on to give us many methods. One of the ways in which we bind the law of God to ourselves, is regular reading of it, and noticing of it, and searching our hearts by it. We keep the standards of God in mind. We read about them, we try to understand them, we feel our great need of them. We realise, if we begin the day forgetful of the standards of God, we shall fall. These are a protection to us, and we acknowledge our weakness. Continually they are to be with us. It is much easier to live as a Christian sometimes at work than it is at home. Is it not? Somehow your spirit is more guarded. Young people find this when they have been at home, and they go away to college, they suddenly discover (initially at any rate) their Christian walk improves. Why is that? Well, it is because now they are surrounded by strangers, and they are on their guard.
Tie them about thy neck – we have had this before from Solomon, the garland about the neck. What does it mean? Well, the garland which is put around the neck, is the garland of victory, or the chain of office, or kingship. The idea here is that the law of God must not only be constantly brought into your plans, but it must be your badge of witness. I make known that I am a Christian, I tell people about my church, I tell them about my faith, I seek to bring them to Christ. The law of God is something I am standing for and representing. I am preaching it to those around me. I am representing it. I am exemplifying it. Remember you are on view, you are a representative, you are a priest of the most high God. If you bare these two things constantly in mind – in all my plans I must remember my spiritual responsibilities and the law of God, and in all my walk I must remember I am seen and I am watched and I am a representative – they will help powerfully.
