Solomon says this because the mind of the man is so bewitched that what should be painfully obvious escapes him. Does he think he can commit such great sin and yet escape the judgement of God? The bosom is the place where the most cherished objects are held closely; should he regard her as something so special that she is given this privilege? ‘Wake up’, says Solomon, ‘Can’t you see that what you are holding close to you is fire?’ If he really understood this, he would take the fire and cast it from him. He would keep his distance from it as something dangerous. Fire it is a most unsuitable object to become too familiar with. This is not a kind and gentle wife, but a destructive force that will burn him. There is no way it can be tamed or changed to make it more agreeable. Fire is fire, and fire will burn: so is the harlot. It is a delusion for the man to think that she can be agreeable to him. Her heart is cruel, grasping and will not change. Fire is pretty and so may the harlot be, but that does not mean that either should be grasped hold of.There are spiritual laws of cause and effect and we cannot switch them off. Any sin has consequences but this sin has particularly grievous consequences which ruin a person’s life. We cannot avoid harm. If there is any recovery at all, by the mercy of God, it still leaves the person scarred for life in the sense that if a believer falls into this sin, they must be disqualified from positions of high responsibility in the church.
