Dishonour the only thing he needs to fear. Can he touch another man’s wife and expect that he will not mind? Can he disturb such a sacred relationship and not expect revenge to be taken? He has dealt a blow against that husband which cannot be healed. If he had assaulted the man’s wife he might expect a terrible retribution, but in this case he has persuaded her to be willingly unfaithful. To every husband, his wife’s heart must count more than everything. If her body is abused then it may have been done against her will, but if she has willingly betrayed him then there is no part of her that is still her husband’s. The man who is responsible for this can expect all the husband’s anger to be directed against him. It is pointless to appeal to his mercy in such a case since his anger is too great to be pacified. ‘For jealousy is the rage of a man.’ This righteous jealousy, such as the Lord has for his name and his people, will not abate because the facts will not allow it to abate. It expresses itself in his fury and only in his fury. There is no mercy mixed in with it. That husband’s jealousy has been roused and why should he show any compassion on one who has not hesitated to destroy the most precious possession that he has?
