Proverbs 6:35 Commentary and Bible Study

What therefore can the man who is guilty of this sin possibly give to the husband in exchange? If he had not taken that which was most valuable of all, then he might have found something more valuable to give in return. But now what is left for him to give? If he had destroyed the husband’s house and he might give him a new house. If he had taken his car then he might replace it. But what can be given in replacement for breaking that trust between husband and wife? What good is it to give money? This will only further anger the husband. For why should he be insulted by being asked to put a price on what is beyond price? How much money does it take to heal broken trust? It is impossible and it would be a strange husband that would accept such compensation. Even the sum of all that you could give him would do no good, for you can only give material things, but what you have destroyed is a spiritual thing. And so we see the awfulness of the sin of adultery, and the surpassing value of the marriage bond. It is above any price that may be paid in this world, when there is deep love and trust between husband and wife.
