Proverbs 6:9

Have you ever known a real live inveterate sluggard, a hopelessly indolent and lazy person, who will not do anything? If so, you will know that the most useless thing you could possibly do, is to ask the logical sensible question, ‘Would you please tell me when you are going to get moving?’ The sluggard is hardly likely to give you a date: ‘At such a time I am going to undergo a great transformation.’ It is a pointless question to ask. Then why does Solomon ask it? What he is illustrating here is the irrational mindless policy of the sluggard. He has just detached himself from all reality. These questions are merely rhetorical. These questions are asked more to give some relief to the asker, to somehow give some release to his exasperation. A parent may say to a child who is going through a very lazy stage, ‘When are you going to pull yourself together?’ But the parent knows there is no answer to the question. It is more an expression of exasperation, than an intelligent, probing question.
Application
Are you a sluggard, friend, with spiritual things? You are so bad, you are so way out. I have regard for you, and yet you are so hopeless, you are so unthinking, you are so foolish, that it is honestly not worth asking you the question, ‘When, when, are you going to consider your soul, your eternal soul, when are you going to wake up?’ What a tragedy it is. Oh may the Spirit of God wake us up, and touch our hearts, and help us to get some depth, and to get over our naïvety, and to see through the world. Oh friends, may God help you to think of these things. So here's the exhortation; if we want wisdom, we've got to know something about being vigorous, self-motivated, and awake, that's the condition.
