So she caught him, and kissed him; she trapped him! Oh, if only we could get this across to younger people. They look at the church so often and they think it is the church which is lying to trap them and in the world they are free, they can do as they like. There is everything at their feet to be explored. No, it is the church which wants to help. It is the world which wants to trap you and imprison you, not the church. It is the church that says, 'My son, open your eyes and see.' And it is the world that is devious, that lurks around the corner and waits in the shadows until it has caught you, getting you to do things its way, think things its way. That is the world, the flesh and the devil which catches you.So she caught him, and kissed him. Even as literature these parables of Solomon are magnificent. Here you get the person hunting and then finally she pounces – he is caught – and what is the very next word? Kiss! What a hollow ring there is about that word when it follows caught. Caught him - kissed him. It expresses all the hollowness of the prostitute's kiss, or the world's kiss. So sham, so empty of real affection – merely show-business style affection. ‘And with an impudent face.’ The Hebrew is tough, strong. And impudent used to have that meaning in the days of the King James translation. It has changed its meaning quite a bit since then, but impudent in those days embraced the idea of being obstinate, determined and that is the sense in which it is meant here. In other words, she was not going to be shaken off. She was absolutely determined to catch him and to get him.
