Things are not what they seem, especially to the one who is blinded by lust. Satan gives us a very one-sided view of things: he talks up the benefits of sin and ignores the dreadful consequences. Her house is the way to hell. Can anyone approach the way to hell without a shudder? Can he walk calmly along admiring the scenery and give no thought to where he is heading? What are you doing on that road? Do not take another step but get off that road altogether and get onto the right road which leads to life. Solomon says this to jolt us, to shock us, to wake us up from dreaming our way to hell. Yes, we can be on that road to destruction and not realise it. Don’t say, ‘Surely I would know if I were heading to such a terrible place.’ The whole point is that sin is a deception and a very skilful deception. Let God’s word instruct us about the true nature of things. She has rooms in her house, but far from being places of hospitality, they are places where the dead are prepared for burial and the judgment that follows.
