Proverbs 8:10

‘Receive my instruction’, embrace it, value it immensely. Silver tends to refer to human skill in the book of Proverbs. What is in mind with silver is articles crafted in silver. We saw that from chapter 3. This is the silversmith's art and craftsmanship, and Solomon use this picture to put across the idea that you cannot live for objects of refinement, for art and culture, and even the most skilful products of human craftsmen. Don't as you go on in the world think, 'Oh it is what the human race can do, what the human race can achieve that counts'. No, it is the instructions of God that count; they are far higher. Receive that. ‘And knowledge rather than choice gold.’ Gold rather obviously stands for security because of its great value and worth. An abundance of gold obviously is security and so Solomon says, ‘Oh, no, spiritual shrewdness, understanding of God and salvation and what life is: this is far higher than financial security. Store your mind with the knowledge of God, the knowledge of life, rather than your vaults and your cellars with wealth.
Application
Put it into practice, always be eager to study. This is what the Lord requires if our minds are going to grow in understanding and skill in applying the word of God to all our lives. We must receive it gladly, not grudgingly, not wearily, not slowly. O Lord, if only I could just receive everything I read in the word, even when it challenges and convicts my soul. Receive it gladly as the word of God, and welcome it, and value it, and put it into practice. ‘Receive my instruction.’
