As one said centuries ago, the earth is the grand theatre, the theatre of the work of God’s wisdom. There is the Godhead, and wisdom as an attribute of God. He operates by infinite wisdom, but as far as we are concerned, the chief operation of wisdom, when it was really allowed to have its head and to do wonderful things outside the domain of the Godhead and heaven, was this earth, human beings, the church, the redeemed. This is the special theatre or sphere of the outward operation of the wisdom of God. Before creation wisdom was throughout God’s domain, the immense Godhead, infinite in every way and eternal. But once the earth was created, it formed the outward application of God’s wisdom. This is not a good illustration, but we could look at it this way. Supposing all our gifts and abilities and powers were spent on ourselves. For us it would be selfish. All my wisdom, all my energy, all my money if I had any, everything is for me. And then, all of a sudden, I decide I must spend some money on somebody else, or I must give some thought to somebody else, or I must make something or do something for someone else. Now this is a very poor illustration, but that is how it was when God determined to create the world. As he is entitled to be, the infinite and immense God was altogether involved with himself. And then with his great compassion and love and desire to create and express and bring into being a people he would bless, suddenly he focuses his wisdom on the first objective outside himself. And what is it? Does he focus his wisdom on some remote star? No, it is upon us, and the habitable part of planet earth, and the human race. Amazingly, the external exercise of the wisdom of God has been to bring us into existence and make wonderful things for us, and when we rebelled against him, the wisdom of God made a way of salvation for us, and to furnish heaven in readiness for the ones he will save by his altogether wise gospel.
