Is there somebody so proud that they would despise everlasting wisdom, God's infinite wisdom, and be so puffed up that they would say they have nothing to learn from that attribute of God that was God’s master builder? There is a state of mind that can get hold of us that knows what is right but refuses to do it, because we would seem to give way to another, to take correction from another; we would need to eat humble pie, and therefore, although we know we are destroying ourselves, we are going to carry on in our stubbornness, and every moment we sense the self-destructive path we are on. What wonderful relief when grace breaks in on us and the spell of pride is broken and we turn to God for help.
Do we hate the wisdom of God? Let us suppose we are all believers. Do you hate the gospel? Surely not, so can we therefore hate the wisdom of God? Yes, you can. Even as a Christian you can hate the wisdom of God because you just want to do what you want to do. You just want to be ultra-relaxed. You just want a nice time. I have got salvation. I have got forgiveness. I have got the Lord. I am going to heaven. I do not want the hard bits, the difficult bits, the self-denial; I do not want to learn the lessons that wisdom teaches me. I do not want the walk of holiness. I do not want to stretch my mind and understand things I do not already know. How foolish of us: we are hating wisdom. Whoever does that is loving death. Not consciously loving death, but it as if that person loves death.
