The temptress sits on a seat at the door of her house which she knows many will have to pass. The passers-by are set on their journey, and have no idea they are going to encounter one who is so dangerous to their eternal prospects. They did not know when they started their journey that morning that they would end up in the house of folly. We are unaware of the enemy of souls and his well-thought-out strategies to draw us into the paths of sin. But you cannot have something for nothing. ‘Come and indulge secret sins. Forget about self-denial, don’t worry about repentance – come, take what you want. You are entitled to these pleasures.’ Satan does not appeal to our affections in a decent way. He is turning us into a mausoleum. That raucous debauched party is intended to soften you up to go further along sin’s path. You never realised that the dead are in there. You are being required to negotiate away your soul. There will be no light and no hope for those who go into her house. Solomon comments on each of her solicitous invitations, and the danger of yielding to them, as he presents her words of invitation. How can any say that the Scripture does not have our best interests at heart when it gives such faithful warnings?
