If only we could just get some sense of the Saviour and his might and majesty: that he knows everything we have done, everything that we think. The hypocrite cannot stand before Christ. The liar cannot convince him. He might convince us; a charming liar can persuade us that what he is saying is true, but Christ’s eyes are a flame of fire. He reads every heart. He knows every motive. Remember that these words are given in the context of the subject seen in the opening of the chapter – the last day, the coming of Christ, the day of judgement. In that day all his opponents will be gathered together and they will shrink before his gaze, which examines them and knows them through and through.
