The apostle John in the vision thought he was going to be given the meaning, but he wasn’t. ‘And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not.
God chooses to reveal some things, and he chooses to hide other things (Deuteronomy 29:29). What is revealed to us now is sufficient for all our needs in this world. What is hidden cannot be known; no amount of investigation will uncover it. This should act as a limit on our curiosity. We are told that John was commanded not to write so that we know there are many other truths that we do not yet know, but in the world to come many things that are obscure will be shown to us. God will take us fully into his confidence, and we will be capable of understanding much more than we can at present. We look forward to that greater revelation, but we trust God in all things, whether revealed or hidden. Heaven cannot be forced to reveal its secrets against its will. Daniel was similarly told to seal up the vision (Daniel 12:4).
