The olive trees speak of the fact that we are working entirely in the Spirit’s power and we are dependent on the word and the Spirit. Every word of witness is accompanied and followed up with silent prayer, because it’s the Spirit who must work. We are only the mouth pieces. We do our best, but the Spirit must regenerate the heart. So it is spiritual power that characterises the church. The two candlesticks or lampstands stand for light, obviously, and truth. They stand before the God of the earth, in the hand of God, accountable to him. When we do gospel work we don’t say, ‘What innovations catch my attention today? What new, never before thought of, thing can I do?’ We think, ‘What’s in the Scripture? What are the methods of the word of God? What are the things that God has ordained?’ Because if we are standing by God, and it’s his work, and we’re dependent upon the movement of the Spirit, then obviously we want to do it in the way which is pleasing to him, which he has ordained, not as some genius on earth, forever dreaming up novel ways, has suggested.
