The wilderness to which we may flee is designed to deal with this flood. Don’t lose sight of the symbolism.
If you’re in the wilderness, you’re safe from the flood. The earth of the wilderness will swallow it up, and you won’t be cast away by false doctrine or worldliness. Temptations lose their power when Christ is near. The things of this world, which the devil offers us, are seen for what they are, things that are passing away that cannot profit the soul. The believer has adopted a lifestyle that proofs him against ‘the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life’. In this lifestyle he is safe. But if he comes out of the wilderness and seeks to enrich himself with the good things of this world, he may drown himself in many foolish and harmful lusts. All Satan’s effort to destroy the church fail. God keeps his people through every trial. He will not remove them from trials altogether, for they are used in our sanctification, but Satan’s capacity to hurt is limited if we take advantage of the refuge that God provides.
