‘It was given unto him to make war with the saints,’ – see Daniel 7:21,25 – and to overcome them’ which he does at the very end: Satan’s little season. ‘And power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
How can the saints be overcome when Christ says, ‘I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it’ (Matthew 16:18)? Certainly that promise is unassailable. Revelation 11:7 is limited to the taking of their lives and does not include the destruction of their souls or of overthrowing the Lord’s cause. The devil will not prevail against the church even though many Christians have to lay down their life for their Lord. In dying they have the final victory. They are then forever beyond Satan’s reach. But before then the devil will overcome them in the sense that he will organise a worldwide persecution of believers from which it will be very difficult to escape. There will perhaps be only a very few left when the Lord returns – ‘I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he really find faith on the earth?’ (Luke 18:8).
