‘The beast that was and is not, even he is the eighth and is of the seven and goeth into perdition.’ The eight is numbered with reference to the five that are fallen, the one that is, and the one that is not yet come of verse 10.
Yet again we are told that the beast is going to perdition. He is on a track that leads inevitably to hell for it is written in the eternal decree of God, which nothing can alter. This truth enables the church of God to be calm in the face of a power and intelligence that they know perfectly well they are no match for. So authoritative and so convincing will the antichrist be, that the saints would despair if not for the assurance of his final demise.
