This is one of several passages in the book which indicates that the church will be suffering persecution at the time when the Lord Jesus Christ returns. As Augustine concluded, ‘Truly Jesus himself shall extinguish by his presence that last persecution which is to be made by antichrist.
‘They that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.’ It is a beautiful expression. When he comes he does not come alone. Those with him are members of his church: those who are called out of the world and godless society. They are chosen. The Greek means, not just selected, but chosen out. The ‘out’ is on the front of the Greek word and is important. They have come out of the things that are corrupt. They don’t come to the Bible study and then go home and listen to the pop channel. They are faithful to that call.
