We read again of the ‘beast, full of the names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.’ We know what that is (Revelation 13:1): the beast out of the sea, world government representing international control and power and coercion, and opposition to Christ.
Interestingly, the harlot who sits on the beast is Babylon, and Babylon is one of the heads of the same beast. That empire of the ancient world has been taken by Scripture and made to stand for the spiritual kingdom of Satan throughout all time. It was that empire that did such great harm to Israel and into which she was exiled and had to live, a stranger. So the church must exist in an alien world. Babylon thrusts its unclean and ungodly values into her face day after day. Constantly Christians have to put up with the filthy standards of this world, which becomes ever more brazen, as it flaunts itself for all to see.
