Love for God characterised them. They had gratitude to him.
That is what we need today everywhere, throughout the world among Christian churches. In affluent parts of the world Christians settle down, and without necessarily being immoral or unethical, they become increasingly worldly, and they enjoy their creature comforts, and they have less and less time for the house of God. But this church at Thyatira had a servant spirit – the Lord first, the Lord before all secular things. This is a pattern for us.
We must be people who love the Lord increasingly, reflecting on him, thanking him and praising him at every opportunity, speaking with him often. You can measure your love by the amount of praying you do. If you want to speak often with the Lord, then you love him, and you look forward to him in that great and final day. A shudder does not go through you when you think of death and the future. Love for the Lord always makes sure it keeps an eye on the future and desires it and looks forward to it.
Make service your delight and duty, and do it with vigour and diligence and faith. Trust God’s ways. In the modern Christian world there is not a lot of trusting in God’s ways. We think we have got to help God out; we cannot trust the word of God and the power of the Spirit anymore. We have got to put on great worldly shows and drama in order to get the people in, because there is not much faith about. Where there is faith we will use the methods of God, and trust the power of God, and pray for Holy Ghost conversion. He can bless our witness.
