‘And all the churches [all seven of them, and all other churches throughout the age] shall know [from this particular historic judgement] that I am he which searcheth the reins [the innermost thoughts] and hearts: and I will give [in due course at the end of life] unto everyone of you according to your works.’ So we are shown the tremendous seriousness with which God takes compromise.Thyatira, you are a good church. You have been much blessed. You have much love and faith and vigour, but you are tolerating this thing which will destroy you. You are allowing a teacher in your midst who is such an offence to Christ and to the gospel, that this will destroy you as a church. You must deal with it, and discipline it, and call for repentance.

Application

Now today the world and the culture of the world and the entertainment culture of the world is anti-authority, anti-moral. It is a god of sensual entertainment. It is an utterly immoral culture. To take its distinctive delights, and to bring them into your life, into your home, into your church is idolatry. That is what this passage is about.

Is there a good church with love and faith and service and patience? Add this, says the Lord, wholesome separation from the world. The church must be separate from the world. There must be a great gulf between that which is sacred and that which is profane. Reach out to the world, witness to the world, love the sinner and sympathise with him, bring him to Christ, but do not you dare adopt her culture or her ways.
