‘But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira [to pastor and people], as many as have not this doctrine [who have not tolerated what was wrong, even though they have not embraced it] and which have not known the depths of Satan.’ What powerful language. They have not imbibed, they have not compromised, they have not known the depths of Satan.There are generally two different ways of interpreting this. Some people say that the depths of Satan was really anticipating Gnosticism. It was another policy that they had which went along these lines – ‘How can you appreciate the grace of God unless you also know the depths of Satan. So go the feasts, mingle with the worst, find out what they believe, learn it all, then you will appreciate more the grace of God.’ But a much more straightforward way of interpreting ‘the depths of Satan’ is to refer it the people who had not been sucked into this deep pit of compromise with the world’s culture. They had not accepted this teaching which trivialises the Lord, accommodates worldliness, quenches the Spirit, corrupts the tastes of believers, and makes light of sin.
