Barnes suggests that it is Venus the planet which is visible in the early morning and heralds the new day. Baalam was a false prophet, yet he was given to speak these exhilarating words: ‘I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.’ Peter sets before us the same wonderful hope: ‘We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts (2 Peter 1:19). Later on in Revelation 22:16, we read that the morning star is Christ. You will see Christ, and he will be to us in that moment like the morning star of promise. He will be wonderful, all powerful, victorious, the Saviour of infinite kindness. But the very sight of him; this is only the beginning. This is only the morning star, the beginning of eternity and ever unfolding glory and understanding and triumph and rejoicing.
