We do not too much about the Nicolaitans, but we can deduce what they were teaching from the references here in the Book of Revelation. They had done a deal with society in that they had reduced holiness to what they wanted. They had worked out a way by which a Christian could get along with a pagan, and a Christian could visit the pagan sacrifices and feasts. He could be half a Christian and half a pagan without being disapproved of. They found a kind of compromise, a way of working this and they are condemned for it.They are condemned, as the chapter goes on, as being exceedingly evil, and Christ hates them for what they are doing to souls and how they are corrupting the churches. But the commendation to Ephesus is that they have found all these people entirely unacceptable and they have rejected them.
Application
The Nicolaitans are very much like many Christians we have today. They have done a deal with the world. Not with paganism – by and large they cannot find paganism in their society – but with worldliness, worldly living, worldly music. These things are brought it into the churches, so that you can be a Christian and you can be a worldling at the same time. But when Christ speaks to Ephesus, he says, ‘I hate that kind of compromise, and I commend you, because you were against it too, and you will not tolerate it.’
