Repeatedly in these closing verses, it is stressed that the Lord Jesus Christ is coming quickly. Therefore his people do not have long to wait.
Who is the one who is coming soon and who identifies himself as ‘Jesus’ in verse 16? He is the Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last, who in Revelation 21:6 is seated upon the throne. The same title has been used of the Lord Jesus at the start of the book (1:8; 11, 17; 2:8). It is the God-Man, the Lord Jesus Christ. His greatness is that magnet that draws us to that final meeting place at the end of the world. Then his title will be fully expounded. He is the Alpha who conceives all things and initiates all things. The progress of history unfolds his plan. The end of history vindicates it from every criticism and shows how vastly superior is his wisdom to that of his enemies. With the return of Christ and the fall of all his enemies, that name will be more clearly understood than ever before. What had been hidden within him for so many ages will finally be made revealed for all to see.
