They are not told exactly when Christ will return, but they are told that God knows how they long for Christ’s kingdom to fully come, and he approves of their eagerness for the end of world and of human rebellion against God. ‘White robes were given unto every one of them;’ – they are given what is calculated to comfort them, a reminder of their justified state and eternal security through the imputation of Christ’s righteousness to them. ‘And it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season’, until the gospel age is finished, until the age of the church is over, ‘until their fellowservants also’, including us, ‘and their brethren, that should be killed [or oppressed] as they were, should be fulfilled.’ So it is all about the church in the gospel age. When they hear why they need to wait, they are satisfied, for by waiting they will see God bring more souls into heaven. That is a worthwhile wait, for once Christ returns the number of the saved will be fixed. Even the praying saints on high wait in glory for the coming of the end of the age, for these things to be played out.They are told that there will always be persecution. They are fully content with the answer they receive. They are to ‘rest yet for a little season’; they have entered into God’s rest. The departed saints are in a state of perfect peace. They are in that state where they are invulnerable. Though there is something more that they look forward to, a yet greater fulfilment of God’s promise to them, there is nothing that troubles them, or makes them doubt for a moment that God will bring the kingdom of this world to an end. They have utter confidence in what he is doing and accept without question his timing of events. They are blissfully happy and lack nothing, and their hearts are focused on what God is doing.
