In a similar way, some interpret the fall of the start of heaven as a figure for the fall from power of the great ones of the earth. But there may be a physical fulfilment of these things, which we cannot yet understand. Although these events, like the great earthquake and the darkening of the sun and moon, may describe physical events, it does not have to mean that the stars will actually fall upon the earth’s surface. That would clearly be impossible given their relative sizes. Hoeksema understands this of shooting stars, but this verse speaks of all the host of heaven falling, so that the inhabitants of the earth believe that the powers of heaven are being shaken (Matthew 24:29). This description is from the perspective of men on earth and exactly how this will take place we do not know yet. Those inclined to scoff should remember the fate of other scoffers of prophecy (Genesis 6:17, 7:10-12; Number 11:18,31; 2 Kings 7:1-2, 18-20) All the most permanent features of this world will be disturbed. Those things which are proverbially immovable will be out of place. Man’s idolatrous and disastrous trust in this world will be exposed. It will be exposed to himself, for many are not aware that their trust is in this present world order until they begin to see it crumbling before their eyes, and only then do they start to sense their loss. Every mountain and island will be moved out of its place. What does this mean? Perhaps that the earth is suddenly breaking up in a way similar to what took place at the flood. Certainly it means that nothing that man trusts in is untouched. He has made a idols of many things and therefore God will judge all those false gods.
