‘Who changed the truth [something said, something given] of God into a lie.’ This is now the second step, and we can see that if we read verse 26 – ‘For this cause …’. So verse 25 is going to give us the reason for God taking the second step of giving over. This is something a little bit worse than verse 23, swapping the true God for false gods or for atheism. What is the difference? Now it is being articulated. Now it is about truth and lying. It is not just swapping the true God, the holy God for no God at all, or useless evil images which will let you do what you like. Now it is being articulated. It is truth and lying. ‘Who changed the truth.’ Now you begin to say: ‘I abandon the true God. I accepted atheism. But now I am prepared to defend myself and argue it. I extol atheism. I promote it. I spread it. I attack the true God and speak against him, to myself if not to others.’‘Who changed the truth [something said, something given] of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature’ – this world, its celebrities, its riches, its wealth, its pleasures, its debased things – ‘more than [instead of] the Creator, who is blessed for ever.’ I have rejected the one who is truly great and holy and good, who fills all things, the eternal and the glorious God. I have the temerity and the audacity and the insolence to reject him, and substitute instead the myth that the world just came into existence by chance: no design, no creation, everything just happened and I have no moral obligation. And I will argue it and debate it. Now I am a militant atheist: I feel it so strongly. Now it has become worse, and there are examples given of this most extreme form of lust in the verse that follow.
