Is it fair that the Gentiles are judged by the same standard as the Jews, even though they do not have the written law? The apostle will argue that it is certainly just and right and fair, because even though they may never have read the published law of the Ten Commandments in the Pentateuch, the books of Moses, they still have the law deeply etched in their constitution as human beings. They have moral consciousness; they have the standards within them.
We do not have to start from scratch when we remind people of God’s standards, and their accountability to him. There is much that they already know, and which they find it hard to deny that they know. Nevertheless, the history of man s a history of his war with his own conscience, and there is a great deal of self-deception which attempts to suppress the conscience. People seem to have an endless supply of excuses for their disobedience, and often we must trap them into admitting what they really know all too well.
