‘One of themselves’ – this is talking about the inhabitants of Crete. This is a Epimenides who was a Cretan wise man and poet of about 500 BC. ‘The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.’ Well it was a national characteristic, it appears. In fact one Greek philosopher, living about a hundred years before Paul said, ‘The thing about the Cretans is that they think highway robbery is a noble occupation.’ Similarly, some of these people who lead Christian bands actually think they are engaged in a noble occupation, but it’s robbery of the house of God. ‘The Cretans are always liars.’
Application
Just stick with the liars. This is a society of lies, isn’t it? Lies in business, lies in the banks, lies wherever you look. Excuses which are half true, sick notes that aren’t genuine, false expense claims, petty lies, grotesque lies. It’s a world of lies. It gets into the church too – ridiculous Charismatic exaggerations, the spirit of the lie. The Cretans are always liars.
