‘To Titus, mine own son’ – not literally Paul's son after the flesh, but his own son in the faith. So Titus evidently came to the Lord under the preaching of the apostle Paul, probably in Syrian Antioch, at the very beginning of Paul's co-pastor with Barnabas in that place, at the commencement of his ministry.
He wishes for Titus grace, mercy, and peace, the three wonderful pillars of the Christian life. May you have as a child of God in this coming week, grace. That means the special favour of God. May you have his favour upon you, undeserved, unearned. May you have mercy, which is, in this context, another word for kindness. In fact it’s often translated kindness, kindness from the Lord. May you have peace, tranquillity, certainty, assurance of your union with God. How can you be sure of having them? If you keep your personal devotions alive, and you love Christ every day, and you draw near to him, and pray to him and bring all your needs before him; if you are yielded to him, then you will do anything for him. If you love him, and depend upon him, and seek after holiness of life for him, then you can be sure that you will have his grace, mercy, and peace every day.
What a great thing it is to fellowship one with another, as Christians, to have friends, brothers and sisters in the Lord, who you know are true sons and daughters, who have renounced the world, and their own personal ambitions and fads and whims, and their own supposed worth, and have gone on their knees to Christ, and found him, and loved him, and he has changed their hearts, and they will do anything for him. He comes first in family life, in business life, in personal life. And so they want to know about Christ, and they want to talk about the word of God, and truth and the progress of the gospel, and the work of the servants of Christ and the missionaries, and these are the favourite subjects and the chief matters. What a wonderful thing to have fellowship with those who are Christ's own sons and daughters!
