‘Which he shed on us abundantly’ – like a mighty fountain. He is shed on us, poured upon us so copiously with such rich abundance.
Why did you repent? Why do some trust in Christ? Because he first secretly worked in their hearts in regenerating love and then he renewed them by the Holy Ghost and gave them new life and a new beginning. ‘Which he shed on us abundantly’, like a great shower coming down as we were saved in a day, transported into the kingdom of God, and given light and understanding and life. It is like having something abundantly pour out upon you. It doesn't take a lifetime to be saved. It is a crisis experience through Jesus Christ our Saviour. So the apostle is preparing us and moving us to good works, to patience with all men, to meekness, to obedience to the civil authority, where we can be courteous at all times. He does this by showing us what we were before, what we have been saved from: the magnificence of the work of God.
