‘This is a faithful saying.’ What is the great faithful saying here? It is verses 1-7; it is primarily verses 1-4, but surely including verses 6-7.
Never despise this saying; it’s absolutely faithful to the word. ‘These things, I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful [very conscientious] to maintain good works.’ Good works in the church with your Sunday School class, with your visiting of the neighbourhood, with your helpfulness in every conceivable way. Good works at home, when it's late in the evening and your dear wife is exhausted, and you are the husband. Do you pick up the reins and help? Help get through those last few hurdles of the day, those last few chores, share it out, pick up the burden? ‘Might be careful to maintain good works’, gospel works, helpful works, works of kindness and assistance. Are you young? Everything has been done for you. As children, everything was done for you. Now you are becoming adults, young adults. You should be doing much more at home. You should be much more helpful. Be careful: there are things to pick up, you never had to do before. It’s good works; it’s what it means. It’s a great thing when some young person is going to be baptised, and a parent, a father or mother, says, ‘Oh, he’s a different fellow at home. She is a different girl at home, so different, so helpful.’ That is marvellous; that is wonderful. As a young Christian, learn to do good works. ‘This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly: that they which have believed in God might be careful and conscientious and applied to keep up, maintain, good works. ‘These things are good and profitable unto men.’ You will be sharing the Lord's love of project mankind by your good works, gospel works included.
