Lord’s answer comes back in the form of words spoken by the angel of the Lord. But those words in turn command Zechariah himself to speak words of comfort. So we have opened up to us the mechanism of the wonderful comfort of prophecy which is the very words of God spoken through men. What is the comfort that God’s people are looking for? It is to know that though they are so insignificant in themselves, and so far below the Lord on high, yet he cares for them. More than that, he is jealous for them. That jealousy means that he cannot allow any real harm to come to them. His loyalty has not changed; his commitment to them is just the same. As a husband is jealous for his wife and watches carefully for her protection, so the Lord is mindful of his people. Far from having forgotten them, he knows what he is going to do, and it will be everything they hoped for and more.
