Zechariah 1:21
Comments
The four horns are the powers which have scattered Judah, but ‘these are come to fray them.’ You could translate that ‘to terrorise them’, the Hebrew means to cause them to tremble. These are to cast out the horns of the Gentiles, the oppressors of God's people, which lifted up their horn over the land of Judah to scatter it.’ So we are learning the language of prophecy. The pictures are, that there have been four horns or powers that have inflicted great trouble upon the Jews, but then they in their turn are going to be smashed, by those who succeeded them, by internal moral collapse as in the case of Rome in the future, by whatever means God chooses. They are the smiths that put the horns on their anvils and smash them to pieces.
Application
Christians, engaged in witness are all craftsmen. We must not be intimidated by worldly powers, for God is teaching us that though they are not aware of it and it takes them totally by surprise, he is already constructing the means by which they will be brought down. They are simple means, means that they would not have regarded as being of any threat to them, and yet they will fall.
